Which one should I go for?
First of all there are no Italian hounds (segugio) in Norway. I am not sure if anyone ever imported one. I can’t find any specimens in the database dogweb.no. There is only one wirehaired “støver” (the Norwegian word for segugio) in Norway and that is the Schweizer Laufhund, but they are few and there are not puppies born every year.
We have many excellent breeds for hunting hare and fox in Norway. Mostly Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish hounds. They all have a short haired coat. But that is not what I want.
I have searched a lot online and found several continental breeds with the “pelo forte” coat: Griffon Bleu de Gascogne (pack hound, limited search and lack of independence?), Steierische Rauhaarbracke (blood tracking specialist?), Istarski Ostrodlaki Gonic (limited search?) and Bosanski Ostrodlaki Gonic / Barak (wild boar specialist?).
I believe Segugio Italiano and Segugio Dell’Appennino will be a better choice for me. What I look for in a hare and foxhound as well as the wirehaired coat is:
A loud and nice sounding bark during the chase
A wide, extensive and independent search
Ability to follow the hare or fox over a long time with barking
Ability to hunt the whole day and still be able to perform the next day
Must handle snow and cold
Relaxed and calm in the house
No barking in the kennel
Kind and friendly with people, children and other dogs
Is the Segugio Italiano or the Segugio Dell’Appennino the right breed for me? And why do you recommend it?
I understand the barking is better with the Italiano and the Appennine might be quicker to find the hare. For hunting fox in Norway you need a dog that can take cold tracks. As I understand, the Appennine hound prefers warm/fresh tracks and thereby more suited for hare? Are these assumptions correct? Are there other general differences?
Please reply in Italian. I can use Google Translate to Norwegian or English.
